Loose grab rails on cabin roof

Post by Diana »

Our deck grab rail is loose above the toilet compartment. The forward end of the rail lifts by about 2 or 3 mm from its proper location. Does anyone know how these attach? Is the rail fixed with a through deck fitting?
The headlining in the toilet compartment appears to be permanently attached, so we don't see how to access the underside of the fitting.
Has anyone removed this headlining above the toilet and if so how did you tackle it??

In our DF1000, where Horsens Yachtværft, choose to destroy our mast, and handrail. (long story short - After demasting during our summer trip, we handed the boat over to a professional boat builder - Horsens Yachtværft, Søren Buhl, he returned the boat with a defect forestay, left the boat with a temporary forestay, send us a bill on the double amount of the agreed repairs, and 20.000kr over the agreed price to the insurance) We shipped the boat to Quorning Boats and he told us, that there were no way to replace the handrail - he had a special handrail made up, that us mounted from the top - with screws - there are no way of getting to the backplates of the handrails in the DF1000.

Dear Martin, thank you for your reply. We are very sorry to hear about your sad experiences with the boat builder.
It looks as though we will need to find a solution working from the outside, perhaps we will try packing the space somehow and sealing it.
Thanks

For information we have solved our problem with the loose grab rail. The grab rail has welded studs that pass through the deck and are attached inside with nuts and washers. We were able to access the bolts behind the headlining in the main cabin. We drilled a hole in the lining of the head and were able to loosen the nut via the hole. We found that the movement had been caused by the stud at the forward end of the grab rail working loose from the grab rail as the weld cracked/failed. When the grab rail was taken off the boat it was easy to fully remove the stud. We took the grab rail to a stainless steel fabricator who welded the stud back on for us. It was easy to reassemble and we have had no problems since. We have put a 'stick on' air freshener over the hole in the head headlining so you can't see any evidence we did the work.
