BROKEN TILLER

Post by allanmcdougall »

Some time ago I had the tiller bolts give way and got the area reinforced with carbon fibre splints. This has not worked as the tiller just broke at the end of the carbon splints.
the metal of the tiller seems to be rather weak, perhaps due to age (1993) But I mention it just in case others might have the same problem developing in this area.
I am relieved that it did not completely break during a recent 100km trip when we were 10km offshore and in somewhat heavy weather.
MY advice is not to reinforce the link to the rudder but to replace the whole stock.

Just lost the tiller aluminum frame yesterday. Just old age (25 years old) and corrosion just forward of some bolts used to secure the autopilot mount.

I'd love to know what you did for this repair? Did you have a new unit fabricated? Order from Quorning?

I'll post up some photos and ask on the general forum too but found your post in a search.

Thanks.
