High Tech sail set

Post by Mika Harju »

After a lot of trouble I have finally received and tested my new sail set. The head sail is about 24sqm membrane sail with 30Technora and 70Carbon yarns. The main sail is about 49sqm membrane sail with 30Technora and 70Twaron yarns. The total sail area was increased by about 12sqm.
Boat speed has increased 1-2 knots especially in light air and tacking angle is 5-10 degrees better.
Sailing is much more fun now!
Attached you will find a couple of drawings and a photo of the set:

Mika,
Sweet set of sails! Really high tech! It is always surprising on how much better performance you get out of a new set of sails! May you put many a happy mile on them!

2nd reef has not yet been in real use, just tested it. My basic idea was 1st reef to be enougth and the 2nd reef is just for survival use. In membrane sails one good point is the sail keeps it's strength and shape when reefed. New set of yarns start from every reefing eye.
In heavy weather I think there will be some problems to get all the sail placed somewhere at the boom. In my previous 39sqm main I had 3 reef lines, but the 3rd one has never been in use.

Mine is DF1000R equipped with taller rotating mast. Mast profile length is 15008 mm. Attached a drawing of my jib and mast. If you need a ready designed 3D IGES file of the jib for your sailmaker just let me know.
