DF 800 Mk2 main halyard

Post by AndyMonty »

My main halyard has some wear and needs replacing. The DF manual suggests a 40m length of 8mm Spectra. This seems very long- the mast is 11, mast to cockpit 3m would suggest 22+3+5= 30m should be sufficient. Am I missing something here? I don't want miles of spare string in the cockpit, and also don't want to buy 10m that I don't need!
Thanks for your help.

I have about 5m spare on my DF 35, very tempted to cut it, but afraid that it is a typical newb mistake...

You can always swap the halyard end for end when it wears. If you cut the excess you lose that ability. Also the extra halyard length can act as a spare shroud if you ever need to replace a shroud.

Cut every year

Don’t forget to cut 10 cm each year – the part that bends at the top wears out. It broke for me once. / Christian
