Waterstay clevis pins

Post by Christian »

Hi
Was sailing in nice wind, half wind, wind in from starboard, made just below 10 knots. A gustspeed increased the speed to 12 knots - and there was a strange cracking sound. Did not understand what it could be. 2 hours later after great sailing - all on the same tack - I got a nagging feeling and checked the waterstays. Port front waterstay was lose! When I grabbed the wire; the clevis pin fell in the water. I only got a glance of it. Could not see how it was broken - just that there was something like a clevis pin falling into the water.

Made a repair at sea. Used one spare bolt from the engine mount.

Look at the pictures. Left is repair at sea, and right is the original on starbord. Is the mouth of the waterstay bent so much on the left one that it have to be replaced?

If it were my boat, I'd heat the end with a propane torch and gently bend it back, letting it cool by itself.
