Saildrive Volvo Penta

Post by Jurij13 »

Hello.

suddenly and without announcement we lost speed going forward. The motor activity was normal, yet without power on the propeller. Going backwards was no problem. What was the problem? We did not have any foreign object in in our propeller. It was no problem to open the collapsible propeller. The gear shifts were all in order.
The cause were the lamellas  of the gear shift in the sail drive.  They were worn out. A well known problem of Volvo Penta.

One technician said, we had to take the Tri out of the water, dismantle the motor, take out the gear box and put in a new clutch.

Another one meant it would be sufficient to dismantle the motor in the water; he would then be able to renew the clutch without taking out the Saildrive.

We have not made up our minds yet on which decision to make.

During our investigation we found out though, that we still have the AFT oil in our motor and exchanged it according to Volo Penta instructions.  Due to the thickness of the motor oil, the lamellas of the clutch in the motor are gripping/working again, and we can use the forward shift with full weight. This is just a preliminary repair though, that will enable us to make it home safely.

We can only recommend everybody to change the oil according to Volvo Penta instructions. Thus the lamellas are not as easily used up and will last longer. We only used our motor for 440 hours.

With kind regards,

Jurij Jersch

Hallo,

Was ist also das Problem gewesen?
