Removing stripes?

Post by Stefan Kolmodin »

I'd like to remove the red original stripe/tape on the side of the mast (aluminium). It's been there since launch 1995 so a bit hard to remove. Anyone out there got a tip on how it's best/easiest done?

Either a hair dryer or a heat gun should do the trick.
I would start with a hair dryer.
We removed some of the striping on our hull with a hair dryer, but a heat gun would definitely be too much for a fiberglass hull.

Thanx Steve,
This is on aluminium so less scary with heat :-)

To rub off the vinyl there are rubber wheels that attach to a drill that are sold to auto-body repair shops. You should be able to find them locally.

Also, the remaining adhesive is difficult to remove because solvents aren't very effective and you end up pushing the adhesive around a lot and removing a little. #08908 Woodgrain and Stripe Adhesive Remover made by 3M converts the adhesive to a non-sticky substance with a texture like soap, which is easily and quickly wiped off with a solvent-soaked rag. It can save hours of work.

Stefan,

Lucky for you, I removed what was left of the stripes on your boat a few years ago! :D

Used to...
Anyway they will be there this summer too since I prefer to sail rather than removing stripes - two new "homemade" jibs to try out asap 8)
